BTC Culinary Externship Scholarship

Applications for the Culinary Arts Externship Scholarship are now available through September 12, 2013.  This scholarship is only for students who are in Advanced Cuisine and will be going on Externship the second half of their third semester.  Students may be awarded up to $500 to help with travel expenses, lodging, etc.  Applications will be handed out in Advanced Cuisine Class or through the culinary office.

Chef Bill Flatt Memorial Scholarship

Applications for the Chef Bill Flatt Annual Memorial Scholarship are available from September 12 through September 19, 2013 with an Annual award of $1000 dollars.

Eligibility Requirements

•       You must be a student in the Culinary Arts Program

•       Be a second year student

•       Be an exemplary student. Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

•       Be currently enrolled at Blackhawk Technical College in the Culinary Arts Program.

•       Have a career goal of becoming a chef or pastry chef.


The Wisconsin Restaurant Association

The WRA (Wisconsin Restaurant Association)  Education Foundation awards scholarships based on future plans in foodservice, academic records, essays on industry issues and professional recommendations.

Over $40,000 in scholarships are awarded annually to culinary arts and hospitality management students across the state.

Blackhawk Technical College Scholarships

Blackhawk Technical College offers several scholarships.  Check out BTC’s main page and look under Financial Aid.

The American Culinary Federation

Several times each year the American Culinary Federation awards thousands of dollars in culinary scholarships. In 2010 a BTC Culinary students was awarded $ 5000.00.

What is my grade??

Feel free to ask any culinary or other Blackhawk Technical College instructor for your specific grade at any time that is convenient to both of you. Remember we all have office hours. Culinary staff office hours are posted in room 1322. Just ask. We are happy to help. You may also set up an appointment by email.

Sanitation Reminders

Proper Uniform: Black or chef checked pants, clean Blackhawk Technical College chef jacket, white or black tee shirt, all black clean oxford style or clog footwear (slip resistant). No tennis or sport shoes allowed in lab. Chef hat should be the same as the first chef hat you received as a gift from the Epicurean Club. The chef hat should only be worn in the fashion intended. No folding or reworking of the design is permitted.

Remove chef jacket before entering restroom. Wash hands in restroom and again after you are ready to resume work.

Always clean as you go. Your mess is a hindrance to you and others and may support pathogens.

Take ownership of your work and your sanitation practices. You are BTC Culinary.

Mise en Place

Remember: Mise en Place is your friend and a great tool. Always be prepared and organized. Read your recipes ahead of time and plan your actions thoughtfully. The success of your product and your completion time are greatly affected by your level of mise en place.

Externship Scholarship applications due by 9/12/13 to the culinary office

Chef Bill Flatt Scholarship packets will be available on 9/17 to students who have completed at least 2 culinary semesters

Accreditation by the American Culinary Federation

BTC Culinary will have a visit from the Accreditation review team on October 1-2. There will be 3 chefs observing and asking questions to assist us in validating and help us on our journey of continued improvement. We welcome the ACF team and are anxious for them to meet our students.

Breakfast – Good Morning

A Breakfast for community leaders will be held on October 8th. Students in Advanced Cuisine should report Tuesday the 8th at 6:30 am you will be dismissed early that day.

The Annual Scholarship Dinner at The Buckhorn Supper Club will be held on Tuesday, October 15th. Yes, we need all of you to continue the success and level of excellence achieved in years past. More details to follow. A menu will be posted soon. A map of driving directions will also be available.  We need door prizes and raffle prizes. Your assistance is expected and appreciated.
