BTC faculty, staff, and students can renew materials twice, except AV equipment and reference materials which can be renewed once by faculty and staff and cannot be renewed by students. Materials may not be renewed if another patron has placed a hold on the items. Materials borrowed from other libraries through the Interlibrary Loan Program may be renewed at the discretion of the loaning library.
Library materials may be returned in person or via campus mail to the Central campus library or to the Monroe campus Learning Resource Center. At Central campus, a night time drop slot is located in the door of the library office, which is next to the main library doors.
Full-time faculty members must return all library materials at the end of the academic year in May for inventory purposes, regardless of checkout date. Materials checked out by part-time faculty members must be returned at the end of the instructor's teaching assignment.
Reminder notices will be sent to students, faculty, staff and community patrons a few days before library materials are due. After an item's due date has passed, patrons will receive overdue notices by email.
Fines for Overdue Materials
Books and preschool books, toys and games – 10¢ per day
Periodicals (magazines and journals) – 5¢ per day
Faculty Reserve materials – 50¢ per day
Reference Materials – 50¢ per day
Video and audio recordings – 50¢ per day
Laptops and other audiovisual equipment – $1 per day (Students can only check out a selected set of audiovisual equipment.)
All patrons are responsible for returning library materials in good condition on or before the due date. If a library item is lost, please contact a library staff member immediately, so arrangements can be made to replace the item. Actual replacement cost plus a processing fee will be assessed for library materials which are lost or not returned. If an item is not returned in 30 days and no contact with library staff has been made, it will be assumed that the item is lost. At that time, patrons will be sent a second overdue notice via email or U.S. mail. After 60 days, the college billing office will send a letter to the responsible patron seeking restitution for the cost of the lost item. Library privileges may be rescinded until restitution is made. If a lost item is found and returned in good condition before a replacement has been ordered, the replacement cost will be refunded.
Curriculum reserve materials set aside for student use by instructors are available at the circulation desk. Course materials placed on reserve by an instructor may be checked out by that instructor and his or her students for the loan periods noted on each item. Faculty members may check out reserves placed by another instructor at the discretion of that instructor. Note: Most curriculum reserve materials are reserved for use in the library only.
Placing a Hold on Library Items
Any library patron may place a material hold on library materials to reserve them for pickup at the checkout desk of any BTC library or LRC. A material hold can be made by accessing the item in the library catalog and choosing the hold option, or by calling (608) 757-7671 or stopping by the library. If the requested item is already checked out, your name will be placed on a waiting list for that item, and you will be notified by phone or email when the item is available for you to checkout.
Arranging an Advance Booking of Library Equipment
BTC faculty and staff may request advance booking of library audio and video equipment, laptops and other library materials. Advanced bookings allow staff members to reserve in advance equipment or other materials for use at a future date.
