Blackhawk Technical College’s new Student Success Center (SSC) at its Central Campus is fast becoming a popular hub for students looking to improve their chances at attracting jobs in their fields of study.
BTC’s Career & Professional Development Office (CPD) is housed in the SSC, Room 2200, and plans seven September events that are aimed at helping BTC students and alumni sharpen their job seeking skills.
In addition, CPD will visit Monroe, Beloit, the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Milton and the Center for Transportation Studies campuses to connect students and alumni with its services.
September’s events begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2, with an information lunch starting at noon that will explain the Certificate of Professional Development (CPD) program. Lunch is free. A similar session with free snacks will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 4:30 p.m.
CPD is a self-paced program moderated by BTC faculty and staff, and community business leaders that emphasizes specialized training and experiences needed to enhance an employment search. Develop your employability skills with resume reviews and mock interviews, among other important job searching techniques.
Other Career & Professional Development events in September at the Student Success Center are:
Internship Prep Workshops: Wednesday, Sept. 10, noon and 4:30 p.m. Investigate a variety of internship opportunities. Internships are a great introduction to the work environment of a variety of fields and provide a head start in getting employed in your field.
Student Engagement: Thursday, Sept. 11, noon. Investigate the variety of student organizations at BTC and make the social and business contacts that may open doors in the future.
Technology Tuesday: Tuesday, Sept. 16 and Sept. 30, noon. Drop in to develop your skills with tools like LinkedIn and Wisconsin TechConnect, two great job listing and resume placement services. Also, build your own job search portfolio through Career Cruising.
How to Get Hired Workshops: Monday, Sept. 22, 4:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Sept. 23, noon in Monroe. Consider this program the first step in the multi-step process of finding the job you want. Discover campus employment opportunities, as well.
The Career & Professional Development staff also will be making stops at other campus sites on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Center for Transportation Studies from 8:30 a.m. to noon and at the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Milton from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesday, Sept. 23, CPD will be at Monroe from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Beloit from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Students and alumni are encouraged to make an appointment on these four stops to guarantee access to CPD services. Contact Colleen Koerth at firstname.lastname@example.org or (608) 757-7724.
