Copeland honored by Craig High School

Ryan Copeland, a McFarland police officer who died in the line of duty in a car crash in 2015 was honored recently at Janesville Craig High School by being inducted to the school's honor wall.

A graduate from BTC's Law Enforcement Basic Academy, Copeland joined the Army after graduating from Craig.  He served as a weapons sergeant and a sniper with the Green Berets and received a Bronze Star for his distinguished service in Afghanistan. While in the Army, he pursued a degree in law enforcement and homeland security.

In 2013, Copeland joined the McFarland Police Department and became its first police dog handler. He and his dog Boris volunteered throughout the community to educate people. He was also involved with Vest a Dog, the Reach A Child Foundation and Shop with a Cop.

He received a life-saving commendation for rescuing a heart attack victim.  Last year, BTC's academy program renamed one of its awards the Ryan Copeland Memorial Marksmanship Award to honor the former student.
