J.P. Cullen & Sons, the nationally recognized construction company based in Janesville, has established a five-year partnership with Blackhawk Technical College that will feature five $1,000 scholarships annually for students seeking associate degrees in Accounting, Information Technology and Administrative Professional.
The J.P. Cullen & Sons Scholarship was officially announced last week when the company received the Futuremakers Partner Award at the Wisconsin Technical College System Board meetings, held at Blackhawk. The company is committing $25,000 to the scholarship program.
“I have enjoyed my relationship with Blackhawk for a long time,’’ said Mark Cullen, the company’s chairman of the board of directors. “Working with the college has allowed me to see how hard the instructors work and how passionate they are about education.’’
The scholarship represents another step in the company’s long relationship with Blackhawk. Company project managers and tradespeople serve on Blackhawk advisory boards for programs that emphasize construction related trades. The new scholarships will aid students in programs related to the business performance of the company.
Those applying for the J.P. Cullen & Sons Scholarship will be selected from the pool that meets the BTC Foundation’s October 1 deadline for scholarships. Money would be applied to the following spring semester. A scholarship committee will review, score and rank the applications based on a student’s commitment to education, career goals, community service, work experience and financial need.
New and continuing students interested in applying must be enrolled in one of the three eligible programs, take six or more credits per semester and carry a 2.5 grade point average.
