Taking Charge/ Becoming His Own Boss
Sal Gomez felt the seed of entrepreneurship growing within him. “I always wanted to do something for myself,” says Sal, “So I came home and I told my wife, ‘Today is the last day I go to work for somebody else. I want to start on my own.’”
Sal knew desire alone wouldn’t yield success. He came to Blackhawk Technical College to acquire the skills and education he needed to achieve his dream.
Sal found Blackhawk instructors very helpful and willing to answer all of his questions. More importantly, they were able to deliver a real-world perspective; instructors in the Green Industry Technician program are currently working in the fields in which they teach.
Through Blackhawk, Sal learned economically-viable and environmentally-sound practices in the planning, establishment and care of public, private and commercial landscapes. He used this knowledge as the foundation for his own business. Sal’s Landscaping & Garden Center launched in Janesville in 1999, and has grown to become a full-service contractor providing residential and commercial landscaping services to the people of Rock County and surrounding communities.
Sal believes, “If you put something in your heart, and you work really hard at it you can accomplish anything you want.” Thanks to Sal, proof of that is growing all over Rock County.
