Frequently Asked Questions
The
class I need is not being offered. Is there a way that I can let
the Blackhawk Technical College know that I need a particular course
or find out if it will be offered?
Yes, you can call or e-mail
Continuing Education staff and let them know of your needs. They
will be able to tell you if there are enough other persons
interested to warrant setting up a class in the topic of interest or
if a class may be planned for the future. You may reach Continuing
Education by calling 608-757-7629 or click button to e-mail them.
As a
business person, I have a few employees that need a certain class.
However, because there were only 3 persons, the class did not have
sufficient enrollment to run and it was canceled. Is there any way
to guarantee that the class will run?
Yes, BTC has tried to develop options for businesses that may
have a few employees that really need a course. By calling BTC’s
registration area (608) 757-7660, you can indicate that you would
like to “Guarantee Run” the class. This means that you will be
responsible for the costs of the difference between the number of
persons who actually enroll and the number needed for the class to
run. For example, if you have 3 employees who need Forklift
Certification. You see that a Forklift Certification class is
offered at our Center for Transportation Studies and you call to
enroll your employees. Because BTC generally needs a minimum of 10
persons to enroll for a class to run, you indicate that you would
like to “Guarantee Run” this class. The registration area then
notes that the class will run regardless of the number of persons
who enroll. If an additional 7 persons enroll, you will pay nothing
additional from the 3 persons you intended to enroll in the class.
However, if only an additional 5 persons enroll, you will be
responsible for the 3 persons you originally wanted to enroll and
the 2 additional slots which constitute the difference between the
number who actually enrolled (8) and the number needed (10) to run
the class. If you have questions about this option, call Mark
Triller, Coordinator, Continuing/Community Education at
608-757-7701, or click button below to send an e-mail.

Can a
continuing education class be offered at our business site?
Sometimes a class can be offered at another location if the
following requirements are met:
- The environment where the class is to be
held conforms to the safety and learning requirements needed for
the class.
- The class is open to the public and there
is sufficient time to advertise or give public notice for
enrollment.
- The location of the class meets
accessibility requirements according to the Americans with
Disabilities Act.
- Special equipment, space, or aids needed
to run the class are available.
- The curriculum for the class is a standard
offering and not customized to the hosting business.
In any event, call Mark Triller, Continuing / Community Education
Coordinator at 608-757-7701 to determine if a given class can be
held at an off-site location.

What is the
difference between a credit and a non-credit class?
A credit class
meets the standards to be included as fulfillment of requirements in
a program (have attendance requirements, meet a stipulated number of
hours, measure performance by giving a grade of A, B, C, etc.) You
may take a total of 5 credits without being in a Program or
completing requirement for admission. (ASSET or COMPASS test,
application, fee, transcripts, etc.) to a Program. A
non-credit or continuing education
class may be taken without regard to requirements of Programs.
Non-credit classes do not receive letter grades but are designed to
help you brush up on skills, learn the latest in a specific content
area, or just develop a personal enrichment area of interest.
Non-credit classes do not
meet the criteria required for credit programs and are not designed
to transfer into credit programs.
What does it mean to audit a class?
To Audit
a class means that you take a credit class, but you indicate that
you do not wish to receive a grade or credit for the class. A
decision to Audit must be
made at the time or registration. A person taking a class for
Audit may not change to
credit, nor may the person change from credit to audit after the
class begins. If you elect to Audit,
you will pay all of the regular tuition and fees. However, no
credit will be granted for the course. Your transcript will show
the “AU” as a grade. Senior Citizens see below.
Are there discounts for senior citizens?
Yes, discounts apply to
individuals 62 years and older. The fees for senior citizens are
listed for each course in the course offering brochure called the
GUIDE (See BTC Publications section on left side navigation). In
compliance with the 1999 Wisconsin Act 154, Blackhawk Technical
College permits a person who is 60 years of age or older upon
approval of the appropriate instructional supervisor, to audit a
course without paying tuition. (Note—all other appropriate fees
apply and the community-based service or apprenticeship courses are
not included.) Please indicate your eligibility for this special
rate at the time of registration. Call 608-757-7660 for information
about Senior Citizen Fees.
Do the classes I take at BTC transfer to a 4-year college or
university?
BTC has many
transfer agreements with 4-year colleges and universities, however,
the ultimate choice as to whether a particular class or course
transfers is at the discretion of the receiving institution (the
college or university to which you are seeking transfer). Be
sure to contact that institution with your question or request.
