About the library

Library Mission

The Blackhawk Technical College Library provides information to serve the educational, cultural and recreational needs of all its students, enabling them to both meet their vocational goals and become competent, well-rounded citizens.  Therefore, its emphasis is to support and enhance the school's curriculum.

Since a basic goal of the library is to encourage reading and develop critical thinking, its material shall be current, relevant and show all sides of issues.  To further these ends it also provides information to enable the faculty and staff assist in these objectives.  It works with other libraries in the community in a spirit of free cooperation.

General Library Information

BTC's library consists of the main library at Central Campus and one branch library at the Monroe Campus LRC with collections at two outreach centers, Airport Center and the Center for Transportation Studies, to provide services and collections tailored to BTC students' academic library needs.

The BTC library offers more than 274 magazines, 27,900 books and audiovisual materials, Internet access, a growing number of computerized full-text databases, and over 33650 ebooks to help students efficiently locate needed information. A delivery system connects all centers to provide students with  access to titles in all collections. Access to these online resources is also available from home and the office.

In addition, students have access to the online catalogs of RockCat, online catalog of all Rock County public libraries and many other state libraries, and can borrow materials from these libraries through BTC Library's interlibrary loan service. To help our students use these resources, the Central Campus and Monroe Campus LRC Libraries provide individual assistance and class orientations to collections, services, and the research process.

The BTC library also provides special reserve collections of materials assigned by instructors at its Central Campus and Monroe Campus Branch locations.

The Central Campus library provides room for studying, and houses the library computer lab, the library services help desk, photocopier with fax service.

The Monroe LRC staff provides testing services and career/scholarship information.  Placement testing services that are available include the COMPASS assessment, SP2/safety test, typing test, Career Scope and WisCareers.  Current BTC students can schedule make-up tests and online tests in the LRC.  Appointments are required for both placement tests and make-up tests.  Please call 608-329-8253 for available appointment times.  A variety of career and scholarship tools are offered in the Monroe Learning Resource Center (Library).  A listing of local employment opportunities and scholarships are available.  There is also a career library that includes a variety of career-related books, resource manuals, and sample resumes.

The Airport Center and the Center for Transportation Studies have collections of books and AV materials which pertain to the courses being offered at those locations.
