CNC TECHNICIAN

This two-year technical diploma program is designed to provide students with a broad technical background in both job-shop and production machining.  The courses are delivered in such a way to allow the students to experience a "hands-on" approach to learning.  Each student will spend his or her time learning in a practical setting.

Using the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Computer Assisted Manufacturing (CAM) software and equipment, including a four axis machining center, the student will learn to select the proper tools and fixtures required to machine parts.  Graduates of this program should be proficient in metal machining operations and planning procedures. They will also have the ability to demonstrate practical machining techniques in accordance with engineering drawing specifications.

Topics of study include CNC programming, CAM software and precision measuring devices, including Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM); precision CNC mills, CNC training and machining centers, blueprint reading and applied shop mathematics.  To complete the program, an internship is required.

The CNC Technician Program was developed using the National Institute for Metalworking Standards (NIMS) and the National Tooling & Machining Association Standards (NTMAS).

Career Outlook/Opportunities

Job opportunities continue to look good for CNC technicians, as employers continue to report difficulties in finding workers with the necessary skills and knowledge to fill machining and CNC programming openings.  Many job openings will arise each year from the need to replace experienced CNC machinists and programmers who retire.
