National Career Development Month at Blackhawk

Every November, the National Career Development Association (NCDA) promotes career development through an annual celebration: National Career Development Month. Career-related activities throughout the month help students of all ages learn about and explore career-related topics.

The Blackhawk Technical College Career Services and Leadership Development (CSLD) team will celebrate National Career Development Month. Special events will be held throughout the month to encourage students to engage in career development activities.

Here is a listing of upcoming activities at Blackhawk for National Career Development Month:

Leadership Speaker: Valerie Jarrett

Friday, Nov. 8 from 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. in the Blackhawk Room (Room 1315)

Valerie Jarrett, the longest-serving Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama and current Senior Advisor to The Obama Foundation, will speak about the importance of embracing change in life and finding your own voice while doing so. She will also share her views on fighting for equality in work and life, and advocating for women in business, politics, and beyond. One of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" and a best-selling author, Valerie is also the former Chairman of the Chicago Transit Board and former Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Stock Exchange.

Creating a Social Media Presence for Employment

Tuesday, Nov. 12: Noon-1 p.m. in Room 2212 on Central Campus

During this session, participants will learn about the importance of using social media appropriately to create a professional online presence. This session will include applying skills to create a LinkedIn Profile.

Wednesday, Nov. 13 – throughout the day

The CSLD team will hand out treats to students to promote the services they offer.

Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 11:30 – 12:30 in the Commons

Stop by and see the CSLD team and learn about all the awesome ways that the office can help students get ready for the workforce. Learn about services they provide; such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, soft skills, and more.

Thursday, Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Student Success Center

Stop by and let the CSLD team review your resume and get interview pointers.

Leadership Speaker: Tiki Barber

Friday, Nov. 22 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the N. Commons (Room 1400B)

In this broadcast, three-time NFL Pro Bowl running back Tiki Barber will provide insight on the importance of creating opportunities, being honest with yourself, and identifying when it's time to evolve and reinvent yourself. Tiki Barber is a ten-year veteran of the NFL with the New York Giants, a well-known TV personality, and Director of KultureCity, an autism acceptance and inclusion organization.

Business Etiquette Luncheon (for Blackhawk students only)

Friday, Dec. 6 from noon-1 p.m. in Room 1315 on Central Campus

Manners are an important factor in today's workforce. Employers seek applicants who will represent the company/organization in a positive way. This session identifies how the basic rules of etiquette can help all professionals enhance their skills in interpersonal communication, teamwork, and relationship building.

Pre-registration is required and space is limited for each Business Etiquette Luncheon. To register for the fall or spring Etiquette Luncheon please stop by Registration & Records. They will register you for the event after you pay a $5 deposit to hold your spot. The deadline is to register is one week before the event or when all spots have been filled.

If you attend the event you will get $5 credited back to your student account.  If you do not show up to the Etiquette Lunch AND do not inform Alicia Acker prior to 48 hours before the event that you will not be there, you will not get your money back and the deposit will be used to cover costs that were incurred.
