Communications Instructor Feels Blackhawk’s Positive Vibe

After a few unexpected life detours, including working as a journalist and editor for several years, new Communications instructor Ray Sidman decided to follow his teaching desire and has been doing that ever since.

Starting his college career in his home state of Kansas, Ray graduated from a community college with an associate degree in Journalism. He later attended Fort Hays State University, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English. It was during those years that he realized he wanted to teach at the college level as a career.

“I’ve worked in other professions and enjoyed them all, but nothing makes me feel more alive than teaching college,” he said.

While he’s still figuring out Blackhawk, Ray says he feels a positive vibe almost everywhere he goes at the college.

“Even when there are difficulties and frustrations, the people are supportive and keep their chins up,” he said. “The strong morale is a huge plus for me.”

That positivity is something that Ray feels helps students learn to stand on their own and let them realize that we all rise and fall, which he feels are both a necessary and constructive part of being human.

Ray has been impressed with what he’s seen and what Blackhawk and its people do and represent, especially for the students.

“It’s a very supportive and nurturing atmosphere that in part encourages and teaches students to be responsible for themselves, their academics, and their careers,” he said.

Ray and his wife have three kids, two dogs and a turtle, and they soon plan to move closer to campus as they currently live nearly three hours away. Besides being a music and movie enthusiast, Ray also enjoys hiking, biking, camping and other outdoor activities (though not so much in the winter).
