Culinary Arts Students Take Top Prize
April 4, 2018
With a pinch of this, a dash of that and a few surprise ingredients thrown in for good measure, Blackhawk Technical College Culinary Arts students Paige Welte and Mason Mauel took first place in the In a Pinch competition at the Midwest Food Service Expo.
- Roth Buttermilk Blue Cheese
- Rosatello Sweet Rosé
- Jones Dairy Farm Dry-Aged Bacon
Welte, a second-year student, and Mauel, who is in his first year at BTC, had 60 minutes to create two courses – a starter and an entrée. The short amount of time wasn’t the only challenge; competitors had to incorporate three surprise ingredients – Roth Buttermilk Blue Cheese, Rosatello Sweet Rosé, Jones Dairy Farm Dry-Aged Bacon - into the two plates. Welte and Mauel’s Sweet Thai Chili Diakon Scroll appetizer and Wisconsin Lamb, Sweet Potato Miso, Forbidden Rice, Roth Buttermilk Shishito entrée won the judges over.
Students from technical colleges and universities around the Midwest took part in the competition which took place in Milwaukee on March 12. In addition to bragging rights, Welte and Mauel won $300.
