Registering for Classes

How to Register for Classes

After you have applied and been accepted into your program, you may register for your program (credit) classes. If you would like to register for a community education or training (non-credit) class, check out the online class search.

New Students

In your acceptance letter, you will receive a link to begin your onboarding process. Once you have signed up through that link, you will start to receive communications about what being a student at Blackhawk means. This will include information on completing your Advising, Registration, and Onboarding (ARO) process.

During the ARO, you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful student, meet your academic advisor, create an academic plan, and register for classes. Additional information regarding financial aid, payment plans, books, tools, and supplies will be included.

Current Students

Current students receive priority registration in order to stay on track for graduation. This means, during scheduled dates, you may register for classes before new students. It is important to take advantage of this opportunity as course availability becomes limited once registration opens to all students. To determine what your priority program is, refer to the Registration card in MyBTC.

Returning Students

If you previously attended Blackhawk but have been away for two semesters or longer, you must re-apply to the college and attend an Advising, Registration, and Orientation Session prior to registering for classes.

It is your responsibility to attend your courses on a regular basis. As a part of Blackhawk Technical College's commitment to student success, we do have a non-attendance policy. If you fail to attend any course sessions during the first 10% of a course’s actual hours of instruction, your instructor will report you as “non-attending” and you will be removed from the course and notified through your BTC student email. At that point, you will no longer be considered registered in that course, will not receive a grade for the course, and cannot start attending unless written approval from the instructor is received. If permitted, you will be required to re-register for the course. Removal from a course due to failure to attend provides an eighty percent refund to your student account and may impact your financial aid.

You can drop a class or all of your classes before the end of the drop/add period. Your BTC account will be credited, and after all fees have been paid, a refund check will be issued to you or we will apply the refund to the credit card used, if appropriate. Refer to the BTC catalog for further information.

You may withdraw from a class or all of your classes before the withdrawal deadline. If you are withdrawing (or dropping) from all of your courses, you will need to fill out an Add/Drop Form and meet with an advisor before you can be withdrawn. However, you are not eligible for a refund and you will receive a grade of "W" on your transcript. If you owe the college any money, you will still have to pay that balance. Refer to the BTC catalog for further information.
