From full-time student to full-time supporter of student success, Alexus Hughes brings her passion for higher education to her new role as an Academic Advisor at Blackhawk Technical College. The South Beloit native, who joined the College on May 19, has been immersed in education since graduating from high school in 2021.

She has earned an Associate of Arts degree from Rock Valley College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Science from Illinois State University, and, most recently, a Master of Science in Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Northern Illinois University. 

“Throughout my educational journey, I was fortunate to encounter many supportive individuals whose encouragement and guidance left a lasting impression. Their positive influence inspired me to give back by supporting students in the same meaningful ways I once experienced,” she said.

To that end, Alexus encourages students to seek out help when needed and to take advantage of the supportive environment at Blackhawk.

“Students should choose Blackhawk Technical College because we offer a flexible education within a supportive and inclusive environment,” she said.

Outside of work, you’ll find Alexus traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She is a member of the Iota Upsilon Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., which actively serves the communities of Rockford and DeKalb, Illinois. She has two dogs; one is a Shih Tzu, and the other is a Shih Tzu-Maltese mix.
