Get to Know Amber Huber, GED/HSED Instructor

Amber Huber is new to Blackhawk Technical College, but she isn’t new to teaching. With roles at Mid-State Technical College, Rasmussen College in Rockford, Madison College, and Gateway Technical College under her belt, her experience is broad.

Huber began working as Blackhawk’s new GED/HSED Instructor on Aug. 11. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of South Florida, a Master of Science in Education degree with an emphasis in Microbiology from UW-Stevens Point, and a job at Marshfield Clinic as a Microbiology Technologist and Project Coordinator for both the medical and veterinary microbiology divisions, one might ask how she ended up being a GED/HSED Instructor.

“I have always loved training employees and, as part of my first job at Marshfield Clinic, I taught Medical Technology students in the classroom and on the bench microbiological concepts and procedures. So, it was a natural progression into the teaching field,” Huber explained.

That doesn't mean she limited herself to one type of teaching.

Huber taught at Mid-State Technical College as a GED/HSED instructor and a program director for the Laboratory Science Technician program. She also worked as a Microbiology Instructor for both Rasmussen College in Rockford and Madison College at the Fort Atkinson Campus. For the last 13 years, she has taught at Gateway Technical College in the GED/HSED and Adult Basic Education Departments.

Huber has watched GED/HSED education evolve into a direct pathway that excites students about college. She encourages them to build a support network at school to help navigate their journey.

“Everyone I have met has been so enthusiastic about all the transformations that have occurred at Blackhawk and the different career pathways and learning options that students have,” she said. “It gets me excited about working here.”

Outside of work, you might find Huber hiking, biking, or kayaking with her husband, and they recently bought a Park Home in Door County. She also has an American Bulldog named Lilly, three adult children, and three adorable grandchildren.
