Ways to Earn College Credit

Start building your future now. With several ways to earn college credit, you can take classes early, explore your interests, and graduate with a head start on your degree.

In-district high schools with college-credentialed instructors may offer courses articulated for Blackhawk credit. Through transcripted credit classes, students apply and register with Blackhawk to complete a college-level course in their high school classroom within one semester. Students earn both high school and college credit—saving time and money through a cost-neutral partnership between the high school and Blackhawk.

High schools interested in transcripted credit designation should contact the Early College Specialist to begin the process. Teacher applications are due by March 1 to allow for adjunct-style onboarding. Approved instructors complete required August training and work with a Blackhawk faculty mentor to ensure course alignment and quality.

Advanced standing courses allow high school teachers that do not meet college credentialling requirements for transcripted credit courses to align their high school course curriculum to match at least 80% of the Blackhawk course. Approved courses are recognized on an MOU with Blackhawk and also identified in the student's high school transcript. When a student applies to Blackhawk and has earned a "B" or better in the high school course that has been articulated, the student will earn transfer credit if the course aligns with the Blackhawk program.

The Start College Now program allows high school students the opportunity to take college courses at Wisconsin Technical Colleges. In keeping with the statute, the pupil notifies the school board of the school district in which the pupil resides of their intent to attend a technical college by March 1, if the pupil intends to enroll in the fall semester, and by October 1, if the pupil intends to enroll in the spring semester.

This process begins with turning in the Start College Now Application (available upon request) to the counselor of the high school in which the student attends. Time and date indication on the application is recommended. If the student is open-enrolled in a school located in a district in which they do not reside, it is suggested the two schools involved collaborate on the approved application.

  • Opportunity for students to take Blackhawk classes MyEdChoice in the high school if they don’t have a transcripted credit instructor
  • Currently offering General Education Courses in a morning block schedule
  • High schools would need to supply a high school Classroom Assistant to support coursework on days class doesn’t meet
  • Schools would be responsible for the cost of the courses
  • Schools need to declare interest by March 1 each year. If schools have a few students interested in courses, it is suggested to have students apply through Start College Now.

There are several programs that high school students could take that do not fall in the above categories:

Contracts

  • Schools can request a closed section of a Blackhawk course in their high school if there is enough student interest and Blackhawk faculty support. There is a student minimum to run a contracted course, and costs are billed to the high school.

Youth Apprenticeship

  • Students that are registered youth apprentices can take related instruction to their apprentice experience at Blackhawk and coursework can get paid for through third-party billing to the high school.

Accelerated Industrial Maintenance

This program is offered in the summer for students age 16 and older in Rock and Green County.

  • The AIM Certificate consists of three one-credit courses from Blackhawk, including: Mechanics of Learning, Safety (OSHA 30 General Industry Certificate), and Troubleshooting Integrated Manufacturing Systems 1 (TIMS). These courses offer a strong foundation of skills for individuals pursuing careers in manufacturing. Student will generate credits through Blackhawk for these courses, and have the chance to explore career opportunities at local manufacturing companies. More Information
