Experienced Chef Takes His Skills to the Classroom

December 14, 2021

Hakim Salaam has loved cooking for as long as he can remember, and he is excited to share his passion with Blackhawk students as a Culinary Arts Instructor.

With about 28 years of experience in the hospitality field, two associate degrees, a bachelor’s degree, and a master’s degree, Hakim, who joined Blackhawk in August, is poised to help students excel both inside and outside the classroom. And he is hopeful that more students will choose to attend Blackhawk.

“They should choose Blackhawk because they can gain a great education here as opposed to going to a university and spending lots more money for the same caliber of instruction,” he said.

Hakim is originally from Milwaukee. He attended Nicolet College in Rhinelander where he received associate degrees in Culinary Arts and in Business Management. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Food and Beverage Business Management from the New England Culinary Institute and his master’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

For those who are interested in the Culinary Arts program, Hakim said “To make sure they are ready to learn lots within the program. Obviously, as instructors can't possibly teach every single trend or concept in the program, so would suggest study, study, study. Also, look at additional degrees, such as bachelor’s and master’s degrees.”

In addition to improving his teaching skills and helping students succeed, Hakim said he is looking forward to networking with fellow Blackhawk staff.

Please join in welcoming Hakim to the Blackhawk community!
