Become a Blackhawk Scholar

The Blackhawk Scholars program allows you to continue your education at Blackhawk Technical College while gaining valuable work experience with local employers. Blackhawk Scholars can work full- or part-time in a position related to their field of study. They will receive a minimum wage of $12 per hour and may be eligible for tuition reimbursement or stipend at the employer’s discretion.

There are several benefits to becoming a Blackhawk Scholar.

The Blackhawk Scholars program is a concentrated effort, in partnership with business and industry, to recruit, educate, and graduate students in fields where workforce shortages exist. This program particularly focuses on high school graduates interested in pursuing manufacturing careers.

Through this program, students can expect to: 
  • gain skills necessary to excel in today's business world, including communication, analytical, critical-thinking, and people skills
  • receive valuable, on-the-job work experience 
  • advance their education within their chosen field (attending full- or part-time) and earn their degree
  • attend classes through a variety of flexible delivery options
  • potentially secure a rewarding, well-paying career with an area employer after graduation

In addition, Blackhawk Scholars must remain in good standing as an employee of the sponsoring employer. Blackhawk Scholars must also permit BTC to release academic progress reports and semester grade reports to the sponsoring employer. 

Application Procedure

Submit Application Materials

  • Obtain a copy of your unofficial transcripts
  • Complete the Blackhawk Scholars Application
  • Submit your application along with your résumé and unofficial transcripts to Career Services

  • Review your résumé
  • Complete a mock interview

Become a Blackhawk Scholar

  • Attend interviews with prospective employers
  • Upon acceptance of a job offer, notify Career Services, and complete the Blackhawk Scholars Program Agreement provided by Career Services

Each semester, the sponsoring employer and Blackhawk Technical College will evaluate student work and academic performance. Students are responsible for reporting their grades and other college information to Career Services AND the sponsoring employer, in a timely manner, each semester.

Sponsoring employers may expect Blackhawk Scholars to take additional courses and/or to meet other academic or work standards as a part of their sponsorship requirements.

Blackhawk Scholars are subject to losing their sponsorship for not complying with College/academic program policies, procedures, and requirements and/or for not complying with the sponsoring employer’s policies, procedures, and requirements. Blackhawk Scholars in violation of College policies and procedures may be subject to the consequences associated with that specific policy or procedure.

If your GPA falls below 2.5, you will lose your Blackhawk Scholars sponsorship. 

Exceptions to this will be dealt with on an individual basis with agreement from the sponsoring employer, Blackhawk Technical College and the student. Should a Blackhawk Scholar lose their sponsorship, the student may continue at the College, if the student is not subject to the College’s established academic suspension policy
