Automotive Instructor Retiring After More Than 16 Years

Sheldon Newkirk, the lead Automotive instructor at Blackhawk, started as a lab assistant at the College while still a student in the Automotive program. Over 16 years later, he is retiring from his position.

Sheldon’s road to a career in the automotive field started in high school when he earned enough to buy a used car that his father would repair every time it broke down. After being forced to hitch a ride after a breakdown, he successfully repaired it himself. This drove him to start learning the trade so he wouldn’t have to depend on anyone else.

Retiring as a Sergeant Major after 26 years in the United States Army in 2000, Sheldon came to Blackhawk and earned an associate of applied science degree and an Automotive Technology diploma. He also received his Master of Business Administration from Concordia University.

Despite being stationed all over the world, Sheldon says Blackhawk is the best place he’s ever worked.

“I would say that the staff, faculty and students are the best to work with and learn with,” he said. “It is the warm friendly atmosphere that makes you think that everyone is your family.”

In his time in the Automotive program, Sheldon says the biggest change he’s seen was the creativity used to accommodate students during the pandemic to allow them to reach their educational goals. Thinking outside the box ended up making the delivery of programs more flexible.

If a student is thinking of making Blackhawk part of their education journey, Sheldon would advise them to have the perseverance to reach their goal. He believes attaining critical skills along with an education is important.

“Blackhawk is on the move in excelling in meeting the needs of our students,” he said. “I chose Blackhawk 17 years ago and it has been one of the best careers that I have ever dreamed of.”

Sheldon will miss his Auto/Diesel co-workers the most, in addition to the staff, faculty and students.

In retirement, Sheldon is opening a company to transport vehicles from the manufacturers to dealerships and other franchises. He also will continue to serve as the Assistant Executive Pastor at Beloit Pentecostal Assembly Church. He also plans to spend time with his wife, two children and his 6-year-old grandson, who tries to beat Sheldon in everything he does.
